Bar Mitzvah Community Service Project

I have selected for my Bar Mitzvah Community Services project to raise money and awareness for Pancreatic Cancer.

My Goal is $1,800.00 since the hebrew number 18 is Chai which means Life.

I will also donate a portion of the gifts I receive for my Bar Mitzvah to Pancreatic Cancer research.

If you feel like making a donation directly here is my site to collect the money going to pancan.org.   You can get to it at the link above.

What is a Bar Mitzvah?

In the Jewish Tradition, we celebrate many milestones. One of the most significant events is becoming a Bar Mitzvah (for boys) and a Bat Mitzvah (for girls), celebrated in the thirteenth year of life. Bar Mitzvah means “son of the commandments.” Upon becoming a Bar Mitzvah, Nathan will accept responsibility for his religious, moral and ethical behavior. In addition to leading the service, Nathan will chant a Torah portion and Haftarah portion.

Much of the service will be in Hebrew. There will be English translations of the prayers in the prayer book. Although services begin at 9:15 am, please plan on arriving by 10:00 am, when the Torah service begins. Services end at noon, and will be followed by a luncheon in the synagogue’s social hall.

Conservative attire is requested (no jeans). Females are requested to dress modestly, covering their shoulders. Cell phones and other electronic devices cannot be used and should be turned off before entering the synagogue. All males are required (and females are requested) to wear a kippah (head covering) which will be available in the synagogue foyer.

We welcome Nathan’s friends and their families to join us for the services and the Kiddush luncheon. We look forward to celebrating this simcha (happy occasion) with you.

Nathan's Bar Mitzvah Announcement in the Herzl Ner Tamid synagogue bulletin

Nathan Luper is the son of Brenda and Steve Luper and big brother to Jessica. He is the grandson of Carol and Fred Luper of Columbus, OH & Dody Norban z’’l and Larry Norban of Phoenix. Nathan moved to Issaquah from Columbus, OH in 2006 and is currently a 7th grader at Issaquah Middle school. He loves computers and has a very good sense about almost anything having to do with them. Nathan enjoys reading, loves music, inventing and grooves on his weekly hip hop classes. Another of his favorite non academic activities is Robotics Club. He spent part of the last two summers at BB Camp in Oregon and can’t wait to return this July. He’s a great basketball player, a big fan of the Mariners and is extremely passionate about Ohio State Buckeye football. On rainy weekends, Nathan’s favorite activities include Xbox and anything on the computer. For his mitzvah project Nathan is raising awareness and money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) in memory of his Grandma Dody who recently lost a short but tragic battle with the disease. He has really enjoyed the learning and preparation for his bar mitzvah, is happy to be sharing the bima with Ali Parsons and is thrilled to be spending the weekend with friends and family from across the country.
